Latin Jazz is growing on the North End!

Jorge Arévalo Mateus

The MAC650 Latin Jazz ensemble’s repertoire is growing rapidly, as a core group of musicians including Gregg Allen (percussion), Michael Piccirilo (bass), Ron Shepherd (percussion), Brian Stevens (violin), and David Davis (sax) gathered at last Tuesday’s session to play and stretch-out. After only the second workshop, the ensemble has already workshopped an eclectic set of tunes:

Angel Eyes” - Dennis/Brent
Blue in Green” – M. Davis
“Come Candela” – M. Santamaria
“Ojos de Gato” – C. Bley
“Para Ti” – M. Santamaria
“Manteca” – Gillespie and Fuller
“Mambo Inn” – G. Sampson
“Well You Needn’t”/“Freedom Jazz Dance” – T. Monk/E. Harris
“Wave” - A.C. Jobim

And it’s sounding GREAT!

Next up at the workshop is Cal Tjader’s “Mindanao,” Mongo’s “Afro-Blue,” and maybe even some originals!

So in the spirit of a true and open musical community, come on down and join us. Everyone with the desire to play is welcome, and it’s free!

Our next sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays, March 10th and 24th. Mark your calendars and warm up that clave—la rumba is going to get hot on the North End!

A great time jamming with pros. The first nite was full of expimentation and everyone taking turns doing leads. The last time there was a mix of jamming and working out a couple of tunes for future reference.
If you are interested in joining or listening to these jam sessions I highly recommend doing so. If you are like me you may be a little hesitant to join because of running into GIANT egos that turn a fun time into ....well you know. Believe me, you won't find that with these guys. And if you don't feel some electricity coming from this I highly recommend a 911 call cause you aren't feeling anything at all.

If a person has good rhythm it can be possible to move well to the music. But a dancer moves with the feeling while dancing. While dancing salsa if the expression is shown it brings glow to the face. There is a splendid website teaching salsa dance.
